- Remove top of unit and fill bottom portion of well(s) with an appropriate disinfecting solution*.
- Replace top and insert prism, tip first, into opening over solution. Make certain the tip is submerged.
- Soak prism tip for length of time recommended on solution label.
- Rinse disinfected prism with sterile water, irrigating, or saline solution.
- Place prism in one of the center openings to dry.
Alcohol is destructive to the plastic materials and bonding agent used to cement the prisms together.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends using Glutaraldehyde 2% (Cidex, Metricide, etc.), in accordance with label directions, as an approved method for disinfection of tonometer prisms. Glutaraldehyde 2% has been shown to be effective against HIV.
